Chimney Draft Failure

This morning I knew it was gonna be warm and I sent the wife a text saying we will be under a "low draft watch" today.. Knowing she didn't have work I didn't prepare the furnace for a low draft condition. Well she went out shopping for a few hours and when she came home she sent me a message saying that the low temp alarm (set for 130) for the flue pipe was beeping (on my handy remote BBQ thermometer ;) ). I immediately told her to go into the basement and look at the mano and sur…

Harman Magnum (original, not "Super Mag") in nice shape. Ran excellent when used in our last house during "pre-900" days. Don't want to keep it just as a backup; should go to someone who is going to use it. Delivery by arrangement. $1200

Hitzer 503

I have to say how much I am in love with my Hitzer 503 fireplace insert. After the first two weeks of learning curve and was that difficult, I let the stove run last night nice and low at 275 degrees and it went 24 hours between shakedowns and fillings. Wow! there is no way wood would ever due that. It took 15 minutes to get the fire going well again then more coal on it and see you in 24 hours. The weather is 45 and raining. I really believe that Hitzer is a great stove and I don't regre…

I bought this furnace used but I am having trouble wiring the thermostat to the blower motor and the front blower motor was not hooked up. Does anyone have any information on how to hook them up properly? Right now the rear blower motor is hooked up to a switch that kicks in on at 200 degrees. The system works fine but it never kicks off until it gets below the 200 degrees. Any help will be appreciated.

coal boiler help

Hi all read some post and have pulled the trigger on a Keystroker coal furnace to heat my house. I have a barn 20x20 that's 60feet from the house to store the boiler in and I installed the pex tubing this weekend to the house from the barn. Now my plumber says he can't help me till mid-Feb. Yes I'm screwed. My old propane boiler is died and i have no heat besides some small heaters.
My questions are how does the inside thermostats tell the boiler to circulate water without some computer …

Nibiru will wipe us out in the next three days. So I want to empty the bank account and spend it on cases of Dogfish and die happy. Like the fiscal cliff however, I will have to go to plan B as the wife told me not so be so stupid and go empty the manure spreader.... Well it was worth a try.

Who has been before, or recently? Is there anything in particular i should be sure to see? It is "open" to the public. Correct? Last i heard there are still a few people living there. Are they still there? Is there anything i should avoid?

KA-2 Boiler Question

We were gone for 2 weeks and before we left I shut the boiler down and just used the porpane furnace set @ 52F. YEsterday when we got home I fired up the boiler but it seems like it is taking quite a long time to bring the house back up to a nice warm temp. Also the water temp is only getting to about 140F. I know it takes a while to ramp up and maybe the house really cooled down but it seems longer than normal. I did give the toker mechanism 1 turn CCW the afternoon and just a while ago I a…

Just moved into a new home this spring and now that winter is here, I have been trying to burn coal with little luck. I have followed other threads instructions on slicing and shaking and have a hard time keeping the coal lit. Lights great, I'll add coal. and by the time I wake up in the morning the stove in just above room temperature and there is still coal remaining that has not burned. There is a type RC draft mounted vertically about 2 1/2' feet above stove. I am burning kimmel's anthrac…

Ireland

Not sure if anyone on here has ever been to Ireland, but it is a pretty good place to go. Fares are pretty cheap due to the poor economy over there right now, so getting across the pond won't set you back too far in the wallet. We, being farmers, chose to stay at a farm over there, and that was a lot of fun. I am not into hotel rooms and crowded cities and this worked out well. It was interesting to sit down at a pub and have a pint with 4 dairy farmers. When the night was done, we concluded …

A lady that works for my wife had somebody break into their house last week. They kicked in the garage door and got into the kitchen through the door connecting the garage and house which they never bothered to lock. Didn't take much, about $1k in jewelery. The perp left a perfect shoe print on the garage door and a receipt from burger king on the floor of the kitchen.

The cops weren't as enthusiastic about investigating this as she would have liked, so she went to BK and got their sur…

Coal Mining: Permitting Process

A few weeks ago a Gold Mine started up in California which had closed in 1954. The one sentence that jumped out at me in that article was that it took 30 years, and 40 environmental permits before it could start up. 30 YEARS? 40 Environmental Permits? And I thought farming was bad!

I would like to think that the NEPA Region would have it a bit easier as they could claim Grandfathered Status since this area was actively mined, but that does not seem to be the case as this Gold Mine was in t…

So I had 12 tons of coal delivered a few weeks back. I built an outdoor bin which right now does not have a trap of it. I plan to put one on soon to keep debris out. But my question is if it gets rained on will it be dust free when I go to move it into the basement?

Fixing warped grates

Hey all, warped my grates a few weeks back, had gotten used to a low slow ash build up from burning wood and let the ash box get too full after I stated burning real fuel.

The weather has been pretty warm here so I've been burning wood for the past couple of weeks but with the colder mornings I'm about ready to switch back to black diamonds. A buddy of mine has cast iron grates in his outside wood burner, he said that you can use a shop press to SLOWLY bring the warped grates back into shape…
