Tired.

I've been working a lot of OT on the weekends. Then during the week I've been getting up at 3-4 in the morning to drive 90-100+ miles one way to work. Needless to say. I'm tired. Last night I got home from work, shook the stove down a little early, filled it. Went to my son's Christmas concert came home, decided to take the ash pan out of the stove and empty it. I didn't put it back in the stove but had kicked the ash pan door closed and latched it with my foot as I carried the pan o…

May not be the Dec 21 but winter has arrived for sure . We just had 16 inches of snow and lost power for 16 hrs. also . The 110 was down for 24 hrs. was back up and running this morning . I had to light the wood stove for a bit last night . I just might get an old hand fed to use during these outages . I took a picture from our kitchen window if I can figure out how to get it uploaded .

steamer?

Happy Holidays to all! I was just wondering what means of adding humidity to a home does everyone use? I used to use an enamel steamer but it was old and in need of replacement. I recently purchased an old 3qt. cast iron tea kettle that I brought back from the grave. I opted for a cast iron tea kettle to keep with the antique look of my setup. I ran into 2 problems. The first being that I find the kettle running dry often. It holds 3 qts. but I can only safely fill it with 2.5 qts, or it boil…

Harman Mark II - how oftern will I need to feed?

Hi, I'm thinking about purchasing a Harman Mark II.
We have a cape cod style house in New England and the total square footage is about 1700sqf.
Until now, we used Vt. Casting, Vigilant to burn the coal but it's an old style and not very efficient.
Could anyone tell me how often I'd need to feed Mark II? Once or twice a day?
The company's brochure says it can run up to 24 hours, but is it really true?
Thank you!!

This would be a progress report. As with earlier post, the fine responders steered me in the right direction. My Mark1 has purred along for about 1 week. I am not new to coal burning as I have in the past used a VC Vigilant with the coal conversion kit. It 's the one made in1979. The Vigilant I had to tend every 7 to 9 hours. The Mark once every 12 hours. I keep the temp of the stove 375 to 400degrees. As with using Blacshak nut coal I get 40 hours per bag. Also I mix some stove size …

Yellow Flame manometer install question

Hopefully getting ready to fire up my boiler in the next day or so. A few details to complete, one being the Dwyer 25 install. I've searched and read a gazillion posts on manometer installs but most pertain to stoves. The Yellow Flame is similar to a Keystoker KA-6. I've seen some posts showing Keystoker provides a hole in the fire door for over the fire draft measurements. No hole in the Yellow Flame Door. The Keystoker door appears to be gasketed whereas the Yellow Flame door just sets in a …

First Post.

Brief history:

I lost my oil burner in my basement due to Sandy. This was my primary heating system (Hot water baseboard) My house has 3 floors third floor being my attic, which I don't heat. My first and second floor combined is about 2200 square foot. My house is a older house not the tightest. I purchased a Vermont Casting Vigillant II stove and found out right away it wasn't enough for my home. I did some seaching on the internet and thankfully I found this site, after a lit…

Our Train is on Fire!

At least that was my thought in 2003 when we threaded our way through Proviso Yard in a crew truck and neared our train, but that was not the case at all. In all my years at working on the railroad I had never seen a full sized steam locomotive approach, and the plume of smoke was incredible. I actually though there was a major fire close to our destination.

It was actually a Steam Train Excursion run and it was neat to see such a lumbering machine sneak past our train and park next to us fo…

MI passes bill allowing concealed weapons in Public Bldgs.

I'm not sure if this was posted yet, but it is a step in the RIGHT direction....

State Rep. Joel Johnson, R-Clare, called the bill a "pro-public safety bill because it allowed gun owners to be an "asset" to public safety in volatile situations.

Question for all you plumbers - well water tempering.

$

As any of you on well water know, the water out of the well is cold...usually about 52 degrees in my case. When someone is showering, I watch the temperature in my oil boiler boiler drop. It's got a domestic hot water coil in it. My oil boiler, which I decided to keep based on advice from wiser men on the forum than me, does not fire ever. A burner wire is disconnected and vent pipe is removed and capped. But water flows from the coal boiler into the return of the oil boiler via a 1 1/4"…
