USA: How to Reduce Dependence on Foreign Oil

I think we can see that if the Middle East is going to be the hot bed where world affairs turn, then it makes sense that our dependence upon oil is the reason for the worlds attention there. As some have said, America's prominence on the world stage could be reduced in part because we lose our bargaining power if our military machine is thus reduced by its ability to move due to it need for oil...a lot of oil.

The one thing we can do is reduce our need for oil and thus keep ourselves on the …

Taming the bitty beast

After making a few mistakes, having a few puffbacks, and a few raging hot fires, I think I might have the hang of burning this coal from Valier's in the DS1500.

The critical things I have found with this coal in this stove, is to make SMALL adjustments to the air, and the new coal *must* be banked. I tried to freshen the fire several times in the past by just throwing 10-15 lbs right on top of an established coal bed. This is a recipe for huge puffbacks and excessive stove/stack temps.

Is this a bad idea?

Hi Guys

I want to vent my stove using a power vent out of the back of my garage. In the back of the garage I have a covered concrete slab that I just use for storage. The roof is framed with ruff cut and I have steel roofing over that. Three sides are open.

Is it a bad idea to run the power vent out this way? I don't have any experience with coal so not sure how smokey it gets, sparks etc..

If I ran it this way I would only need a few feet of pipe.

Thoughts??

Thanks

What if: Terrorist attack rather than disturbed shooter

So do you think we would be discussing the same gun control subjects if the attack was a result of a terrorist group (such as Al Qaida or similar)

Is this a side effect of the effective War on Terror? Or is it an oversight of the War on Terror? Failing to address terrorists within our own society. A suicide bomber or a suicide school shooter are one in the same right? I don't know of many people wanting to comit sucide that are not in some way mentaly ill.

Ash Removal Idea

We have a Keystoker KAA-2 boiler. It runs great! The only hassle is I defiantely have to empty the ash tub every day because of the size. So I have been wondering about a simple ask removal syste and would appreciate your input.
I would fabricate a"pan/tub" to go in place of the round tub. I would obtain say a 2" auger and tube and cut an opening in the ash copmartment of the boier and install this auger set-up. I would run this auger uphill so it would empty into a metal rubbi…

Bubble Radiant Barrier for saving money?

Hi all,

I want to save as much money as possible this year since my SS tax had that increase already and prices keep going up on certain things that you need or want.

So my question is how good is Bubble Radiant Barrier for in the attic ceiling and floor. It's unfinished. How about on my cinder block basement walls? Is there anything I can use on my windows to block the heat coming in in the summer?

Any other ideas are welcomed.

Thank You

Coal soot problem outside

I've been burning Kentucky lump in my wood stove with over fire air for about two months now. I just rigged a grate to fit, shake down by hand, and shovel the ash from under it once per day. It burns great with the setup of air from under the grate and the wood stoves secondary preheated air tubes. I get about 3 hours of secondary burn and 12 hr burns with way more heat than I ever did with wood. I am about a ton into it now and really like the setup, except for one small problem.

The probl…

Has anyone made the move to a machine running Windows 8?? What are your impressions?

Not that I can avoid it, but I am going to be buying a laptop in the very near future and wondered how much pain I am in for with the new OS. I will need to transfer my Outlook email stuff from the older Vista machine to the new machine. All the other files I use are Excel & Word doc's so they should not be a problem copying them over. Any issues networking with an XP machine or a Vista machine throu…

Question: Coal does not shake down

I have a Federal Airtight stove, with 2 "revolving shake grates" burning Pea coal. The issue is with the shaking of the rear most grate. i have noticed once the coal dust is shaken out, the burning coal above it does not fall onto the grate again...instead leaving a Pocket of air above the grate. I know this because i have poked a hole in the coal to see what was the matter. the front grate performs well. the "fingers" of the grate are pointed down into the ash bin ar…
